Department of Sanitary Engineering was established as a constituent the Civil Engineering Faculty the Slovak Technical University and its development has been closely associated with the development of this faculty. The germ of the current department was established in the second year of existence SVŠT, that is in school. year 1939/40 the former the Department of Civil Engineering - Department constructive, transport and water management under the name Department of civil engineering and water management. Because it was the first institute to focus on water management professional, procured instruction in basic and applied water management subjects, not only in the field of civil engineering but also in other fields SVŠT that were already established or later gradually based.

The origins of the current department Defakto date back to 1939 , when the Department of Civil Engineering Department was established I. engineering and water management . The first head of department was turned . Š . Bella . In 1950 was renamed the Department of melioration and Sanitary Engineering , which in 1953 was split into the Department of amelioration and Department of Sanitary Engineering . In 2005 the department was renamed the Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering .
The first head of department was turned . P. Visnovsky , who led the department until 1980.
Education and scientific profiling is formulated science and technology disciplines , such as: water chemistry , water pollution , water supply and treatment of water , sewerage and waste water treatment , water management , waste management , environmental engineering , and the like . Department focuses on the education of engineers , applying to all the water in the basin - health engineering and environmental protection (water supply of population , industry and agriculture, water , sewerage municipal , industrial and agricultural plants , sewage treatment , waste management , etc.). .
Scientific research activity is developing in line with current global trends - Department resolves several national grants ( VEGA , KEGA VEGA ) and international projects ( COO , ESF , EVK , TEMPUS ) on the protection of water quality and use , sewer hydraulics , hydrology urbanized areas , degradation of organic matter in landfill sites , waste management , etc. . ) .
Important personalities that influenced the development of the department were: prof . P. Visnovsky , prof . J. Marton prof . P. Urcikán .
The workload of the Institute of I. engineering and water management in these first years of its existence were at the Department of Civil Engineering Hydraulics articles ( 3 + 1 ) Hydrology ( 3 + 1 ) , modification of water courses and mountain streams ( 3 + 4 ) , water technology water ( 3 + 4 ) , water rights and water management regulations ( 1 + 0 ) and trace exercises in civil engineering and water management ( 8 days in the field) . The Department of Special Education - Department of Surveying Engineering Institute procure the teaching of subjects Encyclopedia of civil engineering and water management culture ( 2 + 0 ) and water rights laws and reclamation ( 1 + 0 ) . The Department of Forestry and Agricultural Engineering - Department of Forestry Engineering from the Institute of torrent control subjects were taught the basics of Hydraulics and Hydrology ( 3 + 2 ) and water rights and water management laws ( 1 + 0 ) . With such a relatively high load pedagogical Department had I. condition . A Hosp . water during this period , as the then most institutions , only two teaching force - one professor who was turned . Ing . Dr . techn . Peter Danišovič and one assistant , who was Ing . Peter Visnovsky .
